It was easy to imagine that the Weaver girls wouldn’t have played since Christmas and would be a little rusty against Saks on Thursday night.

Although it had been 23 days since Lady Bearcats last played they appeared more relaxed than rusty and showed good ball movement at times. They won 51-41.

They beat the Calhoun County Tournament seeded teams to win all three.

Jamie Burns, Weaver coach, said that he was happy with how the team came out. “We played hard, played aggressively, hustled, and we never gave up on them, so that was something I was pleased about.

“I felt that there were times when they could have been more greedy, a bit more aggressive. In the locker room, I had to remind them that they have to want it. You can’t win if nobody shows up.

They wanted it more at the end of the game. They worked hard and didn’t give in, and they were deserving to win. They did a great job.”

Madison Atchley started the Lady Bearcats (3-13), with the game’s opening bucket and a late-in the first quarter 3-pointer. Aaliyah Marks led the team with 23 points. In the second half, Aaliyah Marks had 14 points.

Marks was praised by Burns for “She did well tonight,” she said. She has shown great improvement in her game since the start of the season.

She played well. They didn’t get in her heads. She was mentally tough tonight, and that’s what she needs to do every night. I have seen her grow and develop with each game and demonstrate more mental toughness.

Alonna Crews, Madison Turner, and Sania Angel kept the Lady Wildcats in the game. Angel scored a team record 15 points while Turner and Crews each had 12.

JACKSONVILLE CHRISTIAN60, FAITH CHRISTIAN40: With one of their fastest starts this season, the Lady Thunder took over the game, jumping to a 26-7 lead after the first quarter.

Katy Bryant, JCA coach, stated that “we just pressed for the first quarter really well.” “Faith may not be in our area this season, but they are always one of our rivals, so the team was still motivated and excited to play.”

The Lady Thunder managed to score five double-digit scorers thanks to their quick start. Kara Grace was the star with 13 points and 14 boards. Rebekah Carter scored 12 points, grabbed eight rebounds, had seven assists, and was able to steal five times. Erin Prater scored 11 points, grabbed six rebounds, and had five steals. Kirsten Walker and Addy Lee each had 11 points.

Bryant said, “This really is an excellent group of girls,” after returning to the bench from maternity leave to have her second child. They are fun to be with and work hard.

“It’s not hard to believe that so many people have questioned why this year I returned. They don’t know that I have been coaching seniors all my coaching career. They are like my children, so I treat them the same way. “I’m thankful that I have the opportunity to be back this year.”
