After participating in a barrel racing competition at the Baker Area Community Center, an Opp woman was fatally injured.
According to the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, Regina Short, 56 had just completed the Florida event and was then slammed into the pole by her horse.
According to a press release, the accident occurred at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 7, at the Baker Area Community Center about 45 miles northeast Pensacola.
According to deputies, initial indications suggest that the 56-year-old woman was exiting the area on an exit ramp when her galloping horses suddenly moved. This caused the rider’s head to hit a large wooden pole. According to the OCSO, she later died from her injuries in a local hospital.
The FL07 district of the National Barrel Horse Association later identified Short as the victim.
“Many people are aware about the tragic accident at today’s show…There is no way to adequately address all this,” Abigail McClellan, FLO7 district member wrote on Facebook.
“Regina was aided by many people who came forward to help her while she waited for EMS. They acted quickly and are greatly appreciated. We pray for all those involved and for Regina’s medical team.
Short was not able to participate in the one-day barrel race show. It was postponed following the incident.
