Retired District Judge Trippy Mcguire sworn Matthew Hammett in as the next Alabama State Representative for District 92 in a ceremony that took place at the Covington County Courthouse on Friday, January 6.
“I, Matthew Hammett do solemnly swear I will support both the Constitution of America and the Constitution of Alabama as long as I remain a resident of such states and that I will faithfully, honestly and honor the duties of this office I’m about enter to the best of mine, so please God,” he said after McGuire.
Since May 1996, he has been the owner and operator of his company Hammett Drilling Company.
“If you told me 20 years ago that we would be here for this reason, I wouldn’t have believed it.” Without your prayers and support, we wouldn’t be where we are today. We all have our challenges, but we can also solve them. Together we will solve this problem. I will do my best to resolve the problems as quickly and efficiently as possible. I will also continue to fight for what is right. When deciding how to tackle these problems, I will keep you in my thoughts. Your patience and advice will be invaluable when I deal with these issues. We must work together as a group to find a way for Montgomery and Washington to pay attention. These issues can only be solved if we all work together.
His goals are to collaborate with others and concentrate on the most pressing needs of the district.
“It is one of my top priorities to increase the number of workers in this area. Education is the best way to achieve this. Dual enrollment allows high school students to have access to a wide range of skills without being restricted to a specific trade or skill. This is why I have committed to building a career center in Covington County. The community-elected officials need to find a way for them to come together and address local needs. Hammett stated that we will work with the counties and cities in the district to meet the commission’s requirements.
After Mike Jones had resigned, he was encouraged to run.
“I was encouraged to run by a lot business people and other members of the school board. It was something my wife and I discussed one night. I hadn’t yet made a decision. I was watching the news when I became upset by something that had happened. I was blessed.” We were blessed.”
Hammett is thrilled to have the chance to represent the state. “I am a small-business owner, so I know what it’s like to pay taxes and make ends meets. He said that he was not going to spend the money like it wasn’t his because it is.
He believes that the biggest problem facing the district is the lack of labor force.
“We need to train some of these children who aren’t going to four-year schools and get them trained while in high school. They can earn a decent living once they are out of high school. My number one goal is dual enrollment and career technology. I would like to collaborate with Dr. Brock Kelley from LBW in order to get funding for a main career tech center on Andalusia’s main campus.
McGuire said that Hammett was an honor to receive the oath of office from him.
Matthew has been a friend of mine since he was young and we attended the Macedonia Methodist Church in Rose Hill, where the Hammetts have been members for many years. As a young boy, I was there to see him develop into the man he has become. When you think about Hammett’s name and its meaning to this county, it signifies many traits like hard work, ethics and leadership.
Hammett expressed his gratitude to all who supported his campaign, and those who attended his swearing in ceremony. It shows that people in the county and district trust me and recognize who I am. They know that I will do the right thing once we reach Montgomery.”
Selena Hammett, his wife of almost 28 years, lives in Rose Hill. They have three children, Emily Schuster (26), Bailey Hammett (24), and Joseph Hammett (20).
