White Plains’ post Carter Johnson struggled to find his way early in the season. The Wildcats coach Chris Randall instructed him to “go to the porch”, but the junior of 6-8 had to ensure he was not being sent to another place.

This is what the Wildcats call playing down at the low block. Randall knew that his big man would be the most effective. Johnson has been on the big high school stage for half the season and was an impact player in Tuesday’s Wildcats win over Anniston, 49 to 41.

Randall stated that Carter’s “emergence as an inner force for us, is starting to become matchup problems for people,” Randall added. He was still learning his way to the lineup early in the year, because this is his first varsity experience.

He didn’t play freshman football, but he played JV in tenth grade. So he’s learning the game and the intensity. The difference between playing at 5:15 and 7:30 is the Grand Canyon. Once he gets into that, he has settled in, and it’s not nerve-wracking.

His rise as a player who can stop the run of the opposing team and can also get at the rim when they’re in trouble has been huge. We don’t have any slashers. Carter is an insider who will draw some help from our perimeter guys and open up the possibility for them to be more effective; they have to respect him. We are expanding what we do offensively, and a lot of that is through Carter.”

Johnson’s large stature hampered some Bulldogs’ athletic abilities. Johnson scored 15 points but also grabbed many rebounds and blocked or modified just as many shots. He also made the free throw line. To keep the Bulldogs at arm’s length, he made four free throws in final 1:23 and five in fourth quarter.

The Wildcats’ final finish is just as important as their start – especially Josh Wheeler’s. Wheeler scored seven of their first seven points and finished the quarter with nine. The Wildcats never trailed.

Randall stated, “That was a huge start,” “We need Josh’s help to get the ball to us at our best.

Anniston scored only 13 points in the first period. Although they did have a few runs at the Wildcats during the second half, Johnson was there to stop the Bulldogs getting too close. Midway through the third quarter, the Bulldogs led 24-19. Johnson then scored four of seven Wildcats’ points to give them a 12-point advantage into the fourth.

Anniston was pushing Anniston to the end of the fourth quarter. Johnson made a bucket and a few free throws to bring the lead back down to 13. Johnson then hit four free throws that closed it out.

Johnson stated, “I think everyone knew going into this game that we were going to win.” Johnson stated that everyone on the team showed so much improvement since their last encounter with them. Not to mention how excited they were.

“(The Bulldogs’ earlier loss) was devastating. We just had to get our heads right, and then we were ready to go.
