Anniston – Tuesday Girls: Anniston’s girls are just enough to defeat White Plains; Cleburne County’s Brown reaches 1,500 career points and more

After Faith Brown scored her 1,500th career goal Tuesday night, Todd Gable, Cleburne County coach, shares a moment of silence with Faith Brown.

Eddie Bullock was not far from being the worst of it all, as no one could have told him.

After White Plains beat him 42 to 38 Tuesday night, he declared that “we escaped”. “I told my children they were gonna make me go back and force me to take blood pressure medication.”

Bullock’s inexperienced, athletic team began the game in the way many expected. They quickly took a large lead and quickly regained control. White Plains pulled within two and then lost nine of their last possessions. They were now seven behind at the half-time break.

The Lady Wildcats were able to protect the ball more effectively in the second half and increased the pressure. They were able to get back within two minutes several times, including in the final nine and a quarter minutes.

Bullock stated, “They worked hard and their energy was what gave them a chance.” “We have some players that are still learning and we need to make sure it’s right. White Plains was a tough team. They played like us and didn’t give up. They deserve my thanks.”

Bullock let out a deep sigh of relief while Matt Ford, White Plains coach, wondered what could have been.

After two Akayla Perry free throws it was a four point game. With 41 seconds remaining, the Lady Wildcats made two lazy entry passes to Bella Higgins which the Lady Dawgs rejected. It sealed White Plains fate. Perry was the leader with 19 points.

Ford was still thrilled with how his team performed against the county’s best.

He said, “They competed hard. I’m proud to them.” Hallie Williams (one of six girls who play normal) was the only one to play last year. She played meaningful minutes so they are still learning how to deal with pressure and such. I felt like we took a big step forward.

We turned it over a lot and we spotted them 10, because Coach Bullock does such an excellent job with his defense. They grew up and were able to protect the basketball well, but what was most important was that they competed.

Cooper Martin was instrumental in bringing White Plains back from an early deficit. She made two 3-pointers as well as nine of her team’s record 15 points. All of it was part of a 14-2 run by Cooper Martin that brought White Plains back to 18-16 in the second half.

Ford stated, “I believe there’s just no quit” in them. “This group, especially the (five) juniors, are just gritty. They are not afraid to stand tall.”
