Lawyers in Alaska will provide free legal advice Monday.

Alaskans can get free legal advice at the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day event. These can be family, estate planning and public benefits.

Eric Vang is an Alaska Legal Services attorney in Juneau. He stated that the goal was to provide low-to moderate income Alaskans with the information they need in order to determine the next steps.

Krista Scully, the Alaska Bar Association’s director of pro bono, is Krista. She suggested that people prepare for clinics by gathering all paperwork relevant to their cases.

She said that if someone has paperwork or a case in court, or if there is a housing problem, and they are unsure about their lease, any supporting documentation would be very helpful.

Since the pandemic, this is the first year that services have been offered in person. Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau will host events. Bethel will be hosting the event for the first year.

Anchorage-based lawyers will fly to Bethel in support of local attorneys at their clinic. Scully stated that they anticipate receiving questions regarding disaster recovery efforts following the September storm brought on by Typhoon Merbok.

She said that this is when legal needs will start to arise, as enough time has passed. “The FEMA process is ending, so many of those denials .”

Bethel will be at the Evangelical Covenant Church from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m.

Juneau residents have access to the Alaska Legal Services Corporation between 9 a.m. and noon, and to the Dimond Courthouse between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Services will be offered in Anchorage from noon to 2 pm and at the Mountain View Girls and Boys Club from 2 to 4 p.m.

They’ll be at Fairbanks from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at JP Jones Community Center.

Alaskans may also have civil legal questions answered all year round at the Alaska Bar Association’s online legal clinic .
