A happy bus is a winning bus.

As the team bus pulled into the lot, Oxford coach Joel VanMeter declared that there was a “full celebration in there”. “They are (wins) difficult to come by, so make sure you celebrate every one.”

Friday night was the first in nine days that the Yellow Jackets had played and they showed little rust when taking down Gadsden City, 73-64.

VanMeter stated, “Sometimes it is good to play and other times it’s better to practice.” It all comes down to how your team approaches the situation. The practice was a success for us. We went back to the gym and worked on our toughness. I felt like we were struggling with some of the things that I was noticing tonight. I think that offensive rebounding was a key skill.

“And then, we had to prepare for the next game. I found that focusing on someone who has so many days to prepare helps you focus. It doesn’t matter how much you do. If your players don’t respond, it doesn’t help you. That’s why you need to give them a lot of credit.”

Jaylen Alexander had 22 points, Brock Reaves had 21 and “probably his greatest rebounding game of her career”, while T.J. Allen scored 18. Allen was the Jackets’ leading scorer with 18. The trio combined were 20-of28 at the free throw line. As a team, the Jackets were 22 of 37. Reaves was 9-10 of 10 from the line, and Allen also had four 3-pointers. Allen had three.

VanMeter also spoke highly of the “tremendous minutes” Cristian Gibson and Jordan Kelley spent off the bench.

VanMeter stated that he saw “some guys more confident overall.” I think you saw some guys that had been through the ringer with respect to schedule and who they played. It’s a marathon. John Calipari said that the other night. It’s not a sprint. It’s a marathon. Although you might have lost some games or not played well, are you improving? I think (the break) allowed us to improve.

After a strong third quarter Oxford led 58-43. However, Gadsden City’s Jakobi Sharp scored 19 of his team’s 22 points in the fourth quarter to bring the Titans back in the game.

The Jackets won’t be waiting as long for their next game. They will be back on the court Tuesday afternoon at 4:30 pm in the county tournament against Monday’s Faith Christian Donoho winner.
