Jenny Goss is proud of her new role as certified midwife. She enjoys the opportunity to establish relationships with mothers and newborns at Andalusia Family Healthcare.
“After 11 years of labor and delivery, I realized that the women I was caring about deserved better care. I also felt they deserved more education on pregnancy and delivery. I wanted to give them the tools they needed to make informed decisions about their health care. From the ages of adolescents to menopause, I provide well-women services. Goss stated that she provides education about birth control and other issues women might have, as well as prenatal, delivery and postpartum care.
In April 2022, she moved to Andalusia for the Women’s Health Program.
It took some time to get it up and running due to licensing restrictions in Alabama. I’ve made many wonderful friends while working in labor and deliveries. It will be a pleasure working with our highly skilled staff.”
Goss is proud of her work as a midwife and nurse in the local community.
“I have been a nurse for many decades and I am thankful God gave me the opportunity of learning to be a midwife. She said that she was blessed with a husband who supports me and is my biggest cheerleader.
Her strength is working with women, which allows her the ability to take on the responsibilities of her new job.
“I have a deep love for mothers and babies. I’m calm and reassuring and can quickly bond with patients and bring calm and comfort to a often chaotic situation. It is always a joy to hold a newborn and see the wonderment that they feel. Goss stated that tearsful daddies are my favorite.
She said that she always tries to be there for her patients during labor, if at all possible.
“I am a bedside labor support worker and have taken classes to learn techniques that will make labor easier and faster. I’m the one who spoons ice chips and rubs backs moms to help them find a more comfortable position. It is my responsibility to inform families about their choices, give them advice and be an advocate for them.
She also shared some common misconceptions about midwives that the public might have.
Many people assume that I am a midwife, and therefore will deliver in my home. Although some midwives may do this, I am hospital-based so all my deliveries will be done there. Many people believe that unmedicated births are required if you have a midwife. This is false as well. If the patient requests one, I can order epidurals and pain medication.
Goss states that midwives need to have certain characteristics to be successful.
“A midwife must be passionate and respectful of all cultures and lifestyles. She also needs to advocate for patients. She also stated that she should be a strong communicator and have strong interpersonal skills. This will allow her to communicate with many people and work well in stressful situations.
She was born in Martinsburg, West Virginia and graduated from Takoma Park High School, Maryland. Over the past 30 year, she has lived in California and Alaska, Delaware, Wisconsin, and Delaware. She most recently lived in Dalton in Georgia for five years, where she worked in an OB/GYN office. Mike Goss is her husband.
