Covington County Commission approved a sponsorship for the Chamber banquet at a regular meeting Tuesday, January 24.

The commission approved previously a contract with the municipalities Of Andalusia Opp, Red Level and River Falls for trash pickup and inmate service, as well costs related to work release prisoners.

“The jail administrator reached out to me and asked for a change in the City Of Andalusia agreement’s amount. Administrator Karen Sowell stated that he asked for it to be changed to $25 per hour, instead of the $50,000 lump sum. “This amount could be more or less at the end the year,” Chairman Greg White said.

The commission approved the purchase by Andalusia Chamber of Commerce Banquet sponsorship package (Platinum Level) of $2000.

“In the past, the commission was a $1000 sponsor (Gold level package). Sowell stated that the Chamber has enjoyed a strong relationship this year and that they need our support.

Other business:

  • The Covington Arena was upgraded with wireless microphones and sound system upgrades approved by the commission.
  • The proposal by Parker Metal Company of Andalusia for an awning to be added to the exterior of the emergency operation center was approved by the commission. It will cost $39,700. The project will be completed in 60 to 90 days.
  • The amendment was approved by the commission to allow Sheriff Blake Turman to present uniformed deputies with an amount for a clothing allowance. These purchases were previously made by the Sheriff using discretionary funds and a card.
  • The bid was for heavy equipment parts by Covington Heavy Duty Parts. It was a one year contract that could be renewed for an additional three years.
  • Larry Puckett Chevrolet was awarded a bid to purchase a chassis and cab for a heavy-duty truck cab. The estimated cost was $60,638.
  • Conecuh Bridge was awarded a bid to purchase precast concrete components.
  • The County Engineer’s Department approved the solicitation for bids on fertilizer and seed.
  • Six vehicles that were surplus to the Engineer’s department were approved by the commission and will be auctioned via GovDeals.
  • The purchase of a dumptruck for Engineer’s department was approved by the commission.
  • The commission approved the solicitation for bids to purchase a new tractor and drag for the Covington arena.

The Covington County Commissioner’s next meeting will be Tuesday, February 14, 2009 at 9 a.m. at the Covington County Administration Building. The public is welcome to attend.
