Straughn completed its regular season home schedule, and split the final date against Hillcrest Evergreen at home Tuesday January 24.

Straughn won 38-10 over Hillcrest-Evergreen, scoring seven different points. Straughn also won the regular season title in the varsity girls contest.

Keona Miller scored Keona’s first basket, but the Lady Jaguars couldn’t find the hoop in the second half. Aubrey Pittman scored two more and Melonie Harris had five. The Lady Tigers led 7-2 after the first period. Presley Bates was three-of-four at the free-throw line during the second. Harris and Pittman converted another field goal to give the team a 14-2 advantage at halftime.

Blakeley Smith and Tori Canant both scored two points each in the third period. Harris and Bates both grabbed two points each, while Pittman added a free throw to complete the scoring. Miller scored a bucket for HHS with just eight minutes remaining. SHS led 23-4 at the end of the game. In the final frame, the home offense scored 15 points and maintained a strong defensive effort. Canant and Allyx Williamson scored four points each in fourth. Bates made a long three, Maddie Williamson and Pittman both scored baskets. Miller, Kehonia Bradley and Sonija Evans split six for the visitors.

Harris led Straughn (13-8, 4-0 3A 2 Area 2) with nine points. Bates was close behind with eight. Pittman scored seven points in the win. Canant added six. Hillcrest lost six to Miller

Jaguars 57

Straughn couldn’t recover from a slow start, and was defeated by Hillcrest-Evergreen who won the varsity boys’ game 57-33.

In the first eight minutes, Taylor Sikes and Micah Turner each scored a field goal. Jermonte Stanton scored four points for the Jaguars, helping them to take a 9-4 lead. Christian Locke and Taj Stallon made baskets for the opposing team. Layne Grantham had four points in the second, and was also two-for-two at the line. Daniel Bell converted two free throws for the Tigers. Jamarius Barlow scored three points, while the visitors had 13 and a lead of 22 to 10.

SHS’ Parker Black was the winner with four points. Turner followed him at three. Bell scored his first bucket, and Sikes was awarded a point. Robert Simpson scored four points, while Damarion Watson scored a three-pointer. With three periods left, HHS led by 35-20. In the fourth, both teams scored 35 points. Turner made seven points with a long shot beyond arc. Bell was next with four points and Bell made a three to give the Tigers a total of 13 points. The Jaguars had six points each from Jordan Bonner, Barlow, and Barlow. Locke scored five points in the 22 point run.

Turner, who scored nine points, was Straughn’s top scorer (5-12, 3-3). Bell came in second with eight points, while Grantham had six. Barlow was second with 11 points. Jacob Bradley and Locke came in close behind Hillcrest with nine points each.
