Dwayne Swoop Simpson has been announced by the Andalusia Area Chamber of Commerce as the entertainment for the Chamber’s annual banquet, which will be held at the Kiwanis Community Center on Thursday, February 9.

“Simpson brings basketball zany humor and crazy antics to our tables. He’s also a great performer.” “We are proud to have him entertain us at our annual banquet & awards ceremony,” said Executive Director Laura Wells.

Simpson’s high school coach gave him his nickname because of his ability to leap and dunk long distances. Swoop, a New Jersey native, was a star at Southern Connecticut State University. He was part of the 1997 New England Conference Championship, which reached the Elite Eight of Division II National Tournament. Dwayne, a Computer Science major who worked as a technical support specialist and an intern at ESPN before making it to the Harlem Rockets. Swoop made the move to play for Harlem Globetrotters in 2003. Swoop joined Harlem Wizards in 2007 and has been a key player in the Wizards’ success.

He hopes to inspire his children long term in the same way as he did as a Wizards player. To do this, he will get his teacher’s permit and become a coach, teacher, mentor, and coach.

The theme for this year’s banquet is “Champions in Business”, with an ESPY-type awards evening. For $75, general admission tickets cost $75 and Chamber members get $50 off.

Doors open at 5:15 p.m. Dinner will be served at 7:15 p.m., followed by the award presentation ceremony. The evening will be concluded by entertainment featuring Simpson.
