Anniston’s girls were challenged by Alexandria on Monday and did what Anniston girls do every day. They ran. Anniston won the night with a 39-27 win thanks to Tykeria Smith’s huge fourth quarter. Anniston started the third quarter with a 19-2 run that began late in the third. Smith scored 11 of her team’s 13 highest points.
Smith stated, “When we entered halftime, coach spoke to us and said that we needed to up our defense and score more points on the offense.” “We came out and did everything we could to win the game.” Alexandria was leading 8-2 at the end of the first quarter, and 18-15 in the third. Anniston’s run began with the third quarter. Jayda Fomby’s driving basket gave the Bulldogs an 18-19 lead, which grew to 34-20 in fourth quarter. “We started playing defense,” Anniston coach Eddie Bullock said. “Our strategy was to keep certain people on one side and flow certain people on another. We started executing and succeeded.” Alexandria’s Jordyn Walker scored 15 points.
Coach Craig Kiker of Alexandria said, “We played solid defense all night but we didn’t score.” “I don’t know how many minutes we played. From halfway through the second half to halfway through third, we had four points.
“That was the difference in this game.
JACKSONVILLE CHRISTIAN (61), FAITH CHRISTIANPayten Walker led three JCA players with double figures, scoring 12 points, as the Thunder defeated Faith in Class 1A, Zone 12 play. Walker had six rebounds as well as four steals.
Rebakah Carter had nine rebound, six assists, and six steals in addition to her 10 points. Erin Prater had six boards and seven assists, to go along with her 11 points.
OHATCHEE 59 COOSA CHRISTIANS 7 Jorda Crook scored 24 out of her 29 points during the first quarter, as the Indians rolled past Coosa Christians. One of Ohatchee’s eight 3-pointers was hit by her. She now ranks 19th on the state’s all-time girls scoring lists and is only 161 shy of becoming the 18th highest 3,000-point scorer for girls in state history.
Lindsey Zurchin made six 3-pointers, scoring 18 points for Lady Indians.
