The problems Wellborn has had on the basketball court have been so severe that Justin Amberson, the first-year head coach, wasn’t certain how many losses he was referring to. He wasn’t sure he wanted to find out. He doesn’t need to worry about it now. After years of frustration, the Panthers won their first win of the season Tuesday night by beating Woodland 53 to 42 on Senior Night. Amberson stated, “Aw, man. I love it for them.” It was a heavy weight they carried on their shoulders, and it was lifted. They did it. They played a 4-quarter game. This is exactly what we have been trying to do. They did it tonight, despite being inconsistent. It was amazing.”

MaxPreps reported that the Panthers were at 0-16 when they entered the game. They hadn’t won since beating Jacksonville Christian (42 consecutive wins) on Jan. 14, 2021. The players had written the slide on the dry erase board because breaking the slide was so important. Amberson could not recall what it was and was, frankly, not obsessed with knowing. It’s been a while, I know.

To end their drought, the Panthers played a strong fourth quarter. The Panthers hit three 3-pointers during the quarter, outscoring the Bobcats by 20-10 to win a one-point victory. Ethan Tidwell scored eight points and hit two 3s. Avery Odom scored five points and Jackson Long had five. Odom’s clever move around Woodland big man Christian Beam (who had been blocking their shots all night) gave Odom a chance to make a reverse layup with three minutes left. Amberson stated, “It was almost like they were taking their breath out.” “That’s when the weight began to lift off the children.”

Long was the Panthers’ leading scorer with 17 points. Raymond Williams and Tidwell had 11 each. Woodland’s Beam was the top scorer with 25 points. Amberson said that the Panthers were in “four or five” games this season that didn’t turn out their way. They lost by five to Woodland in December. He said, “It’s a lifted weight.” I think they are now able to let go of all their expectations and just play hard basketball. It’s too bad that it’s so late in the season. It was a great feeling for them. But I wanted them to understand that this is the norm. This is what we want. This is what we want to do. [read more…]
