CHANDLER (AZ) – Chandler officers killed an armed burglary suspect on Wednesday afternoon near Gilbert and Pecos roads.

Police say that a man called 911 from his house after being alerted by the home surveillance camera that someone was in his home.

The suspect, Cody Smestad (30), was believed to be attempting a break-in.

Officials claim that officers heard an eerie sound from the garage when they arrived. Smestad fled back into the house after being confronted by officers at the garage door.

Investigators believe that Smestad later fled the house through the backyard with a rifle. It is not clear if the rifle belonged or if he stole it from the house.

Officials claim that officers ordered Smestad not to fire the gun. However, he refused to do so, prompting two officers in the area to shoot.

“Police were outside with guns drawn. I saw the police outside, and we knew it. I was able to see my nine children and ran to their aid. To protect my family, I had to pull out my gun. But we heard the gunshots and O saw them take the man out on the street to do CPR for almost 20 minutes,” Leauna Jones, a local resident, said.

According to Sgt. Sgt. Jason McClimans, Chandler Police, took Jason McClimans to a local hospital where he was later declared dead.

Officials claim that the incident was captured by both the officers’ body cameras as well as the home camera system.
