Huntsville, AL – Bearcats have a slim advantage in the battle against Ashville in 1A-4A, following the opening day of the state wrestling tournament. Highlights for all the teams from the region who were in action on Thursday.
State champions in Class 1A-4A are back! Weaver has a slight advantage in the opening session of state wrestling championship. The Bearcats are currently at 42 points and second-place Ashville has 41.5. Ashville beat Weaver to win the 1A-4A Northern Super Sectional this past weekend. Dora is third with 37.5. The weight class brackets 1A-4A have been relegated to the finals for the championship. Weaver’s Caden Thornton (160), J.D. Johannson (170) along with Anthony Usry (182) advanced to the championship semifinals.
Dalton Fink (106), Haiden Hise (113), Gianluca Torres (138) Dashawn Kirby Barnes (145), Hunter Hise (152), Brandon Joliff (195) and Hayden Ransom (220) remain alive in the consolation bracket. “Not an ideal morning,” Weaver coach Andrew Fulmer stated. “Tough games today. We lost some players we shouldn’t havebut were overall, we were pleased with our children. They were battling. “We had three semifinalist and the remaining seven will be fighting in consolation tomorrow.” Ashville has four in the championship semifinals, and eight consos. Ashville’s Nick Williamson (145), Tyler Ebner (152), Layden Olson (220) and Mason Wilson (285) advanced to the championship semifinals. Owen Burns (106), Owen Meads (113), Jaden Harris (132), Gavin Hare (138), Bryan Hampton (160), Travis Smith (170), Brady Thrash (182) and Trevor Horsley (195) remain alive in the consolation brackets.
In a head-tohead match, Thornton defeated Hampton at the quarterfinals of 160. Haiden Hise and Meads are scheduled to meet for the 113 consos match on Friday. If they win, Fink and Burns would play in the consos 106. “They will face some tough draw like the ones we have during certain games,” Fulmer said. “We draw each other head-to-head at least once and that’s why it’s huge.” At Von Braun center, Oxford is Von Braun center, Oxford is sitting 14th in 6A, with nine points. There were no 5A games on Thursday. The state tournament ends on Saturday. Here are highlights for the other teams from the coverage area:
Class 1A-4A
White PLAINS — Tanner Jarrell reached the 113 semifinals after a pin to Owen Meads from Ashville. Mason Hahm reached the 120 semifinals after a technical fall on wellborn’s Ahmad Noel, and Luke Campbell defeated The Montgomery Catholic’s Jake Dean by major decision to advance to semi-finals in 182.
Tanner Stephens (126) and is still living in the consolation bracket.
SAKS SAKS Tristan Garrett reached the semifinals of the 106 tournament with an 8-5 win over Weaver’s Fink as well Trent Hopkins got through to the semifinals in 113 with an 8-5 decision over St. jame’s Luke Robbins.
Truth Thurman (126), Triumph Thurman (138), John Bussey (152) and Ramond Pearson (220) fight in the consos.
RANBURNE Carson Hall pinned Corner’s Brandon Murphree in the 285 quarterfinals.

CLEBURNE COUNTY Austen Mayfield pinned Alabama School for the Blind’s Daymion Winfrey in the 138 semifinals. Bryton Clay pinched Beulah’s Bronson Dubose to make it to the 182 semifinals.
Jackson Letson (120) and Noah Morgan (132) remain alive in the consos.
Ohatchee OHATCHEE Briley Carter (106) was pinned by Ashville’s Owen Burns, and Matthew King (152) pin Madison County’s Mykell Buchanan in the semifinals.
Jaxon Tuiolosega (120) and Cody Freer (182) are alive in the consolation brackets.
WELLBORNAndrew Salter took down Dora’s Camerson Gosha to reach the 220 semi-finals.

AFFORDABLE VALLEY —Zeke Curvin was pinned by St. James’ A.J. Alozie in the semifinals of the 195.

PIEDMONT —ChrisJon Gurley won an 6-3 win against Saks’ Ramond Pearson to get to the 220 semi-finals.

OXFORD -(-Garrett Howell (152) took 3-0 against Mountain Brook’s Coleman Bates to make the finals for the 152.
