The Donoho baseball club is set to enter a new phase with the start of the season on Feb. 28. The season is more than just playing in a new class. The Falcons are playing over the course of two seasons at the very least in the class of 2A because of its recent 1A success, won’t ever again become just the Chicago Cubs of area high school baseball, playing only home games on a daily basis. They’ll play under lighting for the very first time in Brock-McWhorter Field and head coach Steve Gendron can’t stop thinking about what that could mean to the development of his team.

GENDRON

“It means that you can create an opportunity to help develop your children’s younger ones because you are able to play during the night,” Gendron said. “The ability to practice is an incredible thing. It’s dark on the mountain around 4:30. So having the option to practice without being stressed and stay on time (on time) every day is important for us. “There’s many aspects to consider – not having to begin your games at 3:30, no rush for umpires, no rushing fans, parents, or parents as well as the ability to play an evening doubleheader which has never been done before except in post-season play which started at 1 one o’clock. There’s so much we’ll be able do in the near future.”

Gendron has been trying to illuminate his ballpark for over 10 years. The lights put up are a cutting-edge LED system mounted on six poles that are strategically located in the area. They’re placed in that, once the ball is removed from the yard at evening, it’s gone that is, it disappears into darkness.

It wasn’t with a lot of money. There were some issues placing the poles as the engineers needed to cut holes into to the base of rock on the side that is home. However, now that the poles have been put in and the lights are up they’ll be able to play. Falcons have their first home game of the season with the possibility of rain on Tuesday, at 6:30 p.m. in a match against Faith Christian. “Any when you make improvements to your facility, it’s an indication that people are interested in what you’re doing in terms of as athletics is concerned,” Gendron said. “All my players I’ve coached over time have dreamed of playing under the lights of their own home. When I reached out to a couple last night , they’re excited and proud of the school and baseball team getting some lighting however they’re also a bit in awe.” The team is also jealous.
