The Andalusia City Council on Tuesday took note of the councilman Ralph Wells, who has been in District 4 since 2012.

Wells who was a retired employee of Carquest (formerly Taylor Parts) and was elected in the year 2016 and then again in 2020, but this time with no opposition.

“It is among the most prestigious pleasures that I have ever had to earn the trust of my family, neighbors and friends who have put me in charge of their interests on the Andalusia City Council since 2012,” Wells said in the process of presenting his notice of retirement to the city. “In the last 11 years, we’ve achieved a lot of great things. I am especially happy with the City’s stable financial standing, the enhancements we’ve made to the infrastructure, and the reinvestment into the downtown. Andalusia is a city with a rich, historical past and it’s important to protect the places that we can , while also continuing to make improvements in our community.”

The Mayor Earl Johnson and members of the Council expressed their gratitude for Wells for his dedication to the City, and stated that the City held him to the highest standards.

“Ralph was a wonderful participant on the City Council,” Mayor Johnson stated. “He utilized his background in business when the council took many decisions regarding spending and financing and we’re now better off because of his efforts.”

City Councilman Terry Powell said, “Ralph has been a huge influence on the city than many people will ever realize.”

Councilman Kennith Mount claimed he first came across Wells at the time they shared the same apartment building while they both were Auburn University students.

“It’s as if Ralph is sitting on a pedestal and I’m trying to be as successful as he is” Mount said. “He had more knowledge on budgeting that I thought there was to be aware of. He’s always been a great buddy for me.”

The Councilman Joe Nix also expressed his appreciation to fellow councilman.

“It’s been a privilege and honor privilege to work with On the Council, and especially due to the closeness of the families we share,” he said, noting to the Nix Wells and Wells families’ bond has been going on for a long time.

City Councilwoman Hazel Griffin also expressed her gratitude to Wells for his professionalism and experience that he brought to his work on the Council.

“We frequently discussed problems that came up in cities,” she said. “I believed in his opinions and appreciated his expertise.”

When Wells first ran for office He claimed his birthplace, family as well educated within the urban area and was offered many opportunities because people in the community took the time to guide and teach him. By 2012, he had been willing to do something for the community.

“I will listen carefully and to express the public’s opinions honestly and to make my decisions based on an in-depth analysis, and to be truthful and not be too serious,” he said at the time. “I am not an elected official, I am not aspiring to a post and I don’t have a plan. I’m just trying to get involved in the local community. I’ve been on waiting list for too long.”

Wells has also been a star player in the sport who was recruited by Auburn University to play for the Atlanta Braves in 1966. While as a council member He has also been a vocal advocate for better recreation facilities. In the future, the City Council plans to name the new batting center at Johnson Park for him.

After receiving his resignation following his retirement, the Council was required to pass an ordinance that declared the seat of District 4 as vacant. It is now up to the Council is now given 60 days in which to nominate an individual to fill the seat.
