Someone was going to win their first victory as a head coach on Wednesday. Jamie Burns of Weaver was two years away from that moment.
Burns’ Lady Bearcats defeated Faith Christian 46-41 in a matchup between first-year coaches. This was the last day of girls’ play in the Glencoe Thanksgiving Tournament.
Burns stated that while we knew it would happen, it was a difficult first week. “It’s very rewarding for me and even more for the girls, because it’s so rewarding,” Burns said. They worked hard. We took what we had to struggle with in each game and worked hard until we could play the type of ball that I know they are capable of.
Burns was expected to become the Lady Bearcats’ head coach last year when Gary Atchley became the school’s football coach. He also had to give up one the three sports that he coached. She decided to delay the start of the season after the birth of her daughter and Atchley accepted it back.
The Lady Bearcats dropped their first five games of the season but managed to win Wednesday and held off the Lady Lions. They pulled away in the fourth quarter, leading by 10 at the end of the period. Faith rallied to pull within two minutes and have the ball twice with the possibility to tie the game. Faith had the ball with 1:30 left.
Weaver defeated the Lady Lions with three free points in the final 32 seconds, and Erionna Richmond’s block on a 3-point attempt from her left elbow with 12.7 seconds remaining.
Burns stated that sometimes it is difficult to get there. They remained composed and didn’t let their emotions take over. They were focused and composed, and they were able do what I asked them to. They executed on every little detail.”
Aaliyah Marks was the Lady Bearcats’ leading scorer with 13 points. She opened the game with a deep 3, scoring the first five points and then scoring 13 more. Ellamae Kines scored 10. Faith’s Ally Folsom was the top scorer with 19 points.
