In an afterlife “Possum” has a smile on his face because an aspiring catcher who he was aware of will sit on the side of the field in Selma. The Donoho’s Lucas Elliott made it official Tuesday, signing a contract to play in the college league for Wallace State-Selma. A school with more appeal for Lucas than baseball. Many connections.

“There’s lots of resemblance with it” the man said. “I’ve been a part of the family there all my existence, with my grandmother and grandfather both from the area. I’ve lived in Selma all my life and it’s got numerous personal connections. “You have heard of “Possum. His entire family comes from Selma.” “Possum” was Elliott’s teammate from the past. He was the former Jase Alderman, who played both baseball and football for Donoho. He was part of the very first Donoho baseball team to make it through the 3rd round in state championships in the year 2019. He passed away in 2021.

“It was with immense sorrow that we mourn the loss of Jase Alderman ’20,” the Donoho School posted to its Facebook page on September. 1st of 2020. “Jase was a lovely compassionate, loving, and kind part of our Donoho family. His generosity was apparent to everyone. “Jase was the embodiment of the school’s mission. He was humble, honorable and hard-working in every aspect of his school work. To have the privilege of knowing Jase was to be loved by him as the Donoho family is very fond of Jase extremely.” Elliott was entering his third year at Donoho at the time that Alderman died . Elliott was a freshman at the time Alderman was last in action for Donoho.

The signing with Wallace-Selma “just gives it that extra significance as I’ll be right next to the team,” Elliott said. “They’ve always been there for me whenever I’ve played. “His parents, his mom and dad are always there at games, and they’ve got their own special place whenever I’m playing. They were present at the time I scored my second and first home runs in this area.” Elliott had contact with several other schools, including Huntingdon as well as Gadsden State. UAB as well as Arkansas State have talked to Elliott about his potential as a player after junior college. “It’s always been on my head from the age of a child I’ve always wanted to play in college,” he said. Elliott has been a part of Donoho’s ongoing success since its debut in 2019. The Falcons made it to in 2021 the Class 1A state final series and 2022 semi-finals. [read more…]
