Calhoun County, AL Calhoun County, AL Oxford beats Montverde (Fla.) Academy to sweep the Perfect Game Showdown at Hoover; Ohatchee softball wins four at the Saks Wildcat Classic
The weather was in the way, putting Oxford’s participation at Oxford’s participation in the Calhoun County baseball tournament on hold until Monday. There’s no conflict, nothing to worry about during this year’s Perfect Game National High School Showdown. Trace Adams’ two-out single brought home Roby Brooks at second base, putting Oxford in front 8-7. Then it was the Yellow Jackets beat Montverde (Fla.) Academy 8-7 in Saturday’s final game at Hoover Met. Hoover Met. Brooks took over as the ace, pitching for the last three innings to get the victory. He did not allow any strikes, no hits, and no walks while striking out five times. Adams also doubled and scored three runs. Carter Johnson had a big day at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a solo homer with two RBIs. Hudson Gilman went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run and Peyton Watts tripled and scored an RBI.
Oxford (8-1) entered the match on Saturday after beating Buford (Ga.) 6-5 ) and defeated West Forsyth (Ga.) 10-1 on Friday. Then, they beat Lewisburg (Miss.) by 3-0 to make it to the final. Watts along with Eli Bozeman combined to throw an inning of no-hit in the final against Lewisburg.. Watts worked through the final six innings, racking up two strikes as well as two walks. Johnson, Nick Richadson, Hayes Harrison, Caleb Robertson and Tide Gann each had one of Oxford’s five hits. Johnson hit the double. Gilman, Adams and Robertson each scored an RBI. “We were a fantastic team effort throughout the entire weekend,” Oxford coach Wes Brooks stated. “My heart goes out to the team who run Perfect Game for putting on such a fantastic, top-of-the-line event that featured some of the most skilled teams from across the country. Thank you to the administration who put in a lot of effort in the background to enable our players to take part. “Coaches were able to come up with a brilliant strategy. Players followed through with the plan. They were great! Seventeen bats with two strikes in the finals, and just one strikeout. We allowed six runs in the first three innings, but held them scoreless in the final three innings.”
PEPERELL (Ga.) 5 3, PIEDMONT 3Jonah Pike Kale Austin Brodie Homesley, and Sloan Smith each had one of the four hits for Piedmont. Smith was the Bulldogs the only RBI. Homesley, Kale Austin, Cole Wilson, Jake Austin and Pike all took to the mound. Pike allowed 5 earned and 9 hits while racking up five strikeouts.
Softball
Ohatchee was able to record four victories and one defeat at Ohatchee’s win in the Saks Wildcat Classic at Woodland Park in which they defeated Lincoln 7-6 in three innings, Jacksonville 5-0 in five, Anniston 11-1 in three and Maples (Ill.) with a 6-0 score in five, before losing 5-4 at Woodland. The game was played against Jacksonville, Hannah Fitch pitched two-hit with the score of three strikes and two walks. Whitney McFry led the offense by going 2-for-3, with a homer and three RBIs. Alanah Fitch went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a double. RBI. Carli Fritts as well as Alexis Phillips had Jacksonville’s hits and both hit singles. When playing Lincoln, Savannah Reaves went 3-for-3, scoring a double, two RBIs, and two runs. Ellie Carden was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a double. RBI.
Carden Doubled home the game’s final run following Breanna Martin was struck by the pitch. Hannah Fitch singled and drove two runs. Ohatchee scored five hits against Anniston and Carden was credited with two hits. Alyssa Davis as well as Alanah Fitch both had an RBI in the game against Maples, Hannah Fitch threw four shutouts, scored a run, and scored one run. McFry also had a single and an RBI.
