Calhoun County, AL Calhoun County, Alabama Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office has provided information about the death of an inmate detained. James Kerry Kennedy, 67 from Dearmanville was detained in February of 2023 under the charge of violating an Domestic Violence Protection Order and Domestic Violence 3rd. He was questioned and transported to the Medical Section of the Jail, where the inmate remained. Two days later, on March 2 around 5 pm the California County Correctional Officer (CCO) was making their rounds, when she realized that Kennedy was in discomfort. The Correctional Officer immediately took him to a nursing home at the hospital, where he started to experience breathing difficulties. The personnel from the nursing and correctional departments were able to begin lifesaving efforts while firefighters and EMS were on their way to the hospital. The county staff used an AED Defibrillator till Kennedy was capable of being transported into Anniston Regional Medical Center where he died of the medical issue.

Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office Lieutenant, Falon Hurst, advised that he was not going to speculate about the causes of death because the investigation being ongoing. It is believed that the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office has asked to have the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office investigate the case in order to ensure complete transparency. Kennedy’s body was transferred into the Medical Examiner’s Office for complete autopsy.
