Covington Electric Cooperative recently sponsored juniors from every high school they serve to go on this year’s Montgomery Youth Tour from March 14-16.

Students were selected in the fall of last year through an essay contest that was held in their schools.

It was a great time for the CEC Youth Tour delegates joined about 130 students from all over the state for the Montgomery Youth Tour, which included visits to Alabama State Capitol, Dexter Avenue Baptist Church Alabama State Capitol, Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, Alabama Department of Archives and History and the Alabama State House. The trip also featured group-building exercises with the motivational keynote speaker Cea Cohen-Elliot as well as a tour to several legislators in the State House.

The CEC’s Montgomery Youth Tour participants competed on March 24, for four spots in the National Rural Electric Youth Tour in Washington, D.C., which is scheduled to take place in June. The competition consisted of tests on co-op history and other facts, and also an interview.

Cora Wyrosdick of Straughn, Landon Hanks of Kinston, Briley Douglas of Pleasant Home, and Aubrey Pittman of Straughn were chosen as CEC’s 2023 Washington Youth Tour delegates. Kendal Nichols from Brantley was selected as the primary alternate while Ava Sormrude of Samson was selected as the second alternate.

“The Youth Tour program is an incredible opportunity for students who participate,” said CEC Youth Tour Coordinator Patty S. Seay. “We have lots of children who find themselves motivated to create positive change within the world and are able to take action to achieve this following this experience. It’s amazing to watch their confidence increase in just three days, however, it happens year after year. I’m very happy that CEC continues to help support this wonderful program for students from our service area.”

The goal for this Youth Tour is to inform youngsters about the ways cooperatives benefit their members. learn about history and government and improve their leadership abilities, and get to know other young people from all across the country and the state, as they visit historical places and landmarks.

“CEC has great pride to take part in this important program. We are confident that these youngsters will represent CEC as well as their schools as well as Alabama as a whole state Alabama very efficiently at Washington, D.C., in June.” Seay added.
