Calhoun County, AL – Piedmont was voted the top seed heading to this week’s tournament. Oxford No. 2 seed, defending champion Alexandria No. 3, and White Plains No. 4

Piedmont could be the top. 1 seed for this weekend’s Calhoun County softball tournament after the county’s coaches’ vote last Sunday on the field at Wellborn High School. The highest county seed is an unprecedented first ever for Piedmont softball. “It definitely is an honour to be regarded as a single seed with numerous strong softball teams within Calhoun County,” Piedmont coach Rachel Smith said. “It doesn’t mean that we’ve achieved anything, however. And in six months no one will be able to remember the person who was seeded as number one. “They will only be able to remember which team came out first. There is lots of work to complete as a group and a lot to demonstrate.”

The tournament starts on with a game on Monday, Woodland Park and concludes with the finals and semifinals on Thursday in Jacksonville State University. Piedmont (15-7) is sporting an 11-2 record in County competition. The three-year old Class 3A Bulldogs are 1-1 with the 6A Oxford as well as 4A White Plains, 1-0 against 5A Alexandria and 1-1 in the team from 4A Jacksonville and a total of 4-0 against 3A rivals Wellborn, Saks and Weaver.

No. second seeds Oxford (12-4) along with No. 3 seed and the defending champion Alexandria (16-12) are placed in their respective classifications according to the Alabama Sports Writers Association poll. No. four seeds White Plains (12-8) has been named as a contender in 4A. Piedmont is a state-ranked team, having reached the state tournament the first time in its history of fast pitch in the last two seasons it is ranked the No. five within the 3A top 10. The Bulldogs also won their first tournament, the White Plains Lady Wildcat Invitational beating Oxford, Alexandria and White Plains in the process. Oxford also defeated Piedmont in the pool.
