The Juneau School District and its teachers’ union reached a tentative bargaining agreement last night.
“It’s proved to be a major satisfaction for everyone,” stated Juneau Education Association President Chris Heidemann.
The previous teachers’ agreement expires in June 2022., and the union announced a standoff against the district on January. The biggest concern to the union is the proposed reductions in the monthly health premiums that they pay.
Heidemann explained that the specifics that are in the draft agreement would be released when it is sent to union members at the end of this week. Members will then decide if they want to accept it or not.
“We believe there are enough positives in this agreement that the members should have the opportunity to speak out about the issue,” Heidemann said.
This week this week, Juneau Education Association issued a directive last week. Juneau Education Association instructed teachers to only work during the hours of paid work in order to to not be able to perform additional tasks between school and home.
“I’m fairly certain the pressure factor was a large part of the reason we were able to a settlement agreement in such a short time,” Heidemann said.
Director Bridget Weiss said she hopes that this will help teachers start the summer season with an euphoria and better morale.
Its style=”font-weight 400 ;”>”We were extremely motivated, as our union to bring the point we are at,” Weiss said. “We are extremely grateful for the work teachers have been doing especially during the last few years. .”
When union members approve the contract the school board vote will be held.
