The four Covington county baseball teams are set to start the journey to winning a state championship during the opening round of the AHSAA state championships this week.


Two teams will play in the opening round games after securing their respective regional championships. Two teams will travel to the next round following runners-up results.


The winners and runners-up of each of the areas 1A-6A will be able to play the first round on the home turf of the winners in each area in accordance with a bracket drawn for each category. Double elimination is the rule in a best-two-of-3 series. All runners from the area are invited to the first round.


Both the first and second game of the game will take place as a doubleheader game on the day that the series begins. The host team will play in the role of “home team” for the opening game in the series. The team traveling will be designated as the “home team” during the game following. The home team will be the home team in the event that the third game has to be played on the 23rd of April, Saturday.


It is reported that the Alabama High School Athletic Association has set the price for tickets at 10 dollars for doubleheaders, and $8 for a third match. Tickets will be offered through GoFan. There will be no tickets sold at the ticket booth.


Florala (12-2) The 1A Area 2 champion, will take on Notasulga (4-5) for an all-star series starting Thursday, April 20 beginning at 2 p.m. If the need arises for a third match to be played, it will take place on next Friday, April 21, at noon.


Opp (13-10) The 3A Area 4 champion, will take on Saint James (14-12) in the series that will begin on with a game on Friday, April 4, at 4:45 p.m. If there is a need for a third game to be played, it will take place on on April 22 at noon.


Red Level (8-7), the 1A Area 3 runner-up, will play Central-Hayneville (12-6) in the series that will begin on the day of play at 4:30 p.m. If there is a need for a third game the game will be played the following Saturday, at 1:00 p.m.


Straughn (10-9) 10-9, the 3A Area 2 runner-up, will play Childersburg (12-8) for an eight-game series starting the day at 4:30 p.m. If the need arises for a third match to be played, it will take place on Saturday, around 1 p.m.


The first-round winners will move on to the second round, which is scheduled for Friday April 29 and the following Saturday, April 30.
