The University of Alaska Southeast will present student art created by students through its Northwest Coast Art Program on Friday.
In the course of the week, students made paddles in an underground workshop on campus. Lukwil Gatgyeda T’aamtsooyax James Williams was working away in one of the workshops for master Wayne Price’s class.
The span style=”font-weight 400 ;”>”I am unable to make it look like I want it to. I’ve been playing around with it. And different designs,” he said.
Many of Price’s first carving students were focused at their paddles, leaning over them using chisels or paint brushes. Nobody was talking.
Price says they’re ready to showcase how they’ve done their job.
Its style=”font-weight 400 ;”>”Everybody’s keeping track of the days until they finish and how much work they’ve managed to complete,” Price said over the sound of carving.
Guna Megan Jensen’s work has been completed. She is an instructor in the department of Arts but has taken Price’s class due to her admiration for his work.
span style=”font-weight 400 ;”>”Because the boss is. He’s the best.” she told me.
Price explained that students have been working many hours outside of class as well. Price says that the weekend showcase is the chance to master the art of presenting their projects.
It’s a span style=”font-weight 400 ;”>”Based on my personal experiences participating in exhibitions of art, these are hard,” Price said. “Some people are very proficient at doing it. However, it didn’t happen in a flash, for me. It was a gradual uphill to the highest point. .”
Price’s advanced class will include their art work, which includes masks and clan caps.
The gallery is accessible to the public from 4-8 p.m. on Fridays in Egan 225, the identical building to UAS library. UAS university library.
