Calhoun County, AL Calhoun County, ALAll students from 6th to 12th grade, including students who are homeschooled, from Calhoun County and surrounding areas were invited to compete at the second annual Jim and Shirley Justice Center Essay and Oratorical contests.

The applications were received with entries prepared according to the established rules The judges were then able to evaluate the entries the entries and then winners were chosen!

The essay topic for the contest was “The significance of a Peaceful Democracy.” The winners are:

  • 1. Chaci Whitfield Oxford High School Senior
  • 2nd spot: Kye McEwen Oxford High School, Sophomore
  • 3rd Place: Ja’Miah, Oxford High School, Junior

All winners of the Essay contest are from Oxford High School. Chaci Whitfield is the 1 1st place winner this year, was a 2 2nd place winner last year.

The theme for the contest’s oratorical competition was “Can Democracies survive Global Climate Change?”

  • Winner: Ava Smith, Donoho School Junior.

Public is welcome be a part of with Calhoun County Democrats at 6pm on April 20th, at the Jim & Shirley Justice Center located at 812 Noble Street when Essay winners will read their essays while their Oratorical Contest winner will deliver their speech. Let’s celebrate the youth of today who are learning, gaining experience, and advance into adulthood, where they can lead us into the future.

The winners will be awarded the award of a certificate, medallion, as well as a cash prize. The dinner potluck “pitch into” dinner will be served to everyone who is present.

These contests were developed to stimulate youngsters to think, debate and discuss important issues on public policy. Each contest recognizes the memory of a Calhoun County citizen who had particular interest in the promotion of civic engagement and solidarity with their community.

The contest’s essay competition honors Shirley Justice, who died in the year 2020. Shirley and her husband Jim had a desire to create an legacy that would inspire and increase the level of the civic consciousness, citizenship and participation for all people. The essay contest as well as The Jim & Shirley Justice Center represent their dedication.

The contest is a tribute to his late colleague doctor. George F. McKerley Veterinarian. The late Dr. McKerley knew the value of a solid educational background and the ability to speak for all citizens.
