Madison Atchley hit her first career home run in the first game of the season, and Weaver defeated Gadsden City 15-0 at home on Wednesday, setting the stage for an important Class 3A, Area? matchup against Piedmont. The Bearcats (15-6 and 4-1 in the region) are playing host to Piedmont in a Thursday. Piedmont could clinch the region championship with victory and Weaver could make an end-of-game tiebreaker. Atchley is a senior and hit a three-run homer in Weaver’s six-run second innings. “I nearly cried,” said Gary Atchley who is Weaver’s head coach as well as Madison’s father. “Coming in the second half she was like my 8-year-old self who was jumping up and down when she was younger.” Atchley also had one hit, while Ellamae Kines hit two times. Kynlee Fulmer pitched a single-hit inning with seven strikeouts in just four innings.

White Plains Invitational:Write another chapter in the friendship rivalry among Weaver’s Nick Ledbetter and White Plains’ Sawyer Edwards. A week after Ledbetter defeated Edwards in at the Calhoun County event, Edwards prevailed over Ledbetter in a one-hole match to take the White Plains Invitational at Silver Lakes. Both golfers shot 5-under-par in regulation. Edwards won the opening hole in the playoff after Ledbetter failed to make an eight-foot putt. Hewitt-Trussville was the winner of the title of team champion with a 1 over 289 as did White Plains was second at 7-over 295. White Plains’ Wyatt Cotney was tied for fourth place at 3 under 69.
