Based on the Covington County Office of the EMA, a significant portion of the region is now classified as a “Slight Risk” for the formation of severe thunderstorms this Thursday.

Early signs suggest that the overall structure of the system is expected to bring significant rain with rain that is heavy locally mostly on Thursday afternoon. Storms that are severe to strong with severe winds, hail up in quarter-sized sizes and even the possibility of tornadoes.

The potential for severe to severe storms is present all the way from late Thursday morning until the afternoon. It is likely to end from east to west in the late evening hours. The likelihood of rain that is heavy locally will occur generally during the afternoon of Thursday between 2-5 p.m.

Like any storm system like any other storm, the EMA recommends that the public be ready by being well-aware of weather conditions, having multiple methods of receiving warning messages and having an “safe area” prior to when it’s needed.

The Covington County EMA office is located at 272 Hillcrest Drive in Andalusia and is open beginning at 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. For more information, contact EMA Director Susan Harris at 334-428-2670.
