Calhoun County, AL– As per Calhoun County Sheriff, Matthew Wade on May 1 around 4:45p.m. Demario Lamote was placed in an area with maximum security after which he refused to be cuffed up or locked inside his cell. Burnett took a mop to clean the area and broke the handle in two pieces. He put himself in the shower and threatened to hurt officers and resisted going to his cell. Inmate Burnett began to get aggressive, with breaking the mop’s handle hitting an officer on the head several times. The deputy who was struck also hit in the torso area by Burnett. The correctional officers and deputies responded with a variety of less lethal weapons in a bid to stop the attack and to subdue the prisoner. The less deadly methods did not have much effect in the initial stages. In the end, a correctional officer employing de-escalation techniques as well as the use of the non-lethal chemical spray managed get the prisoner to give up. The deputy who was hit by the head was taken to a hospital for treatment, where he was released. After the incident was dealt with and investigated, the incident was initiated, which included a variety of body camera footage. District Attorney Brian McVeigh and his office looked over the evidence and assisted the office with bringing these charges:
