After a truck pulling a trailer of cattle crashed into the median on Friday morning, dozens of cows were able to escape onto Glendale’s Loop 101 freeway.

A southbound driver with 109 cows hit a median on Glendale’s Loop 101 freeway just before 4 AM. The accident opened the trailer’s gate and allowed some cows to roam freely on the highway lanes.

According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, approximately 15-30 cows fled and blocked southbound lanes.

Road workers managed to get the cattle onto the right shoulder of the freeway after a while. According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, one cow was killed and two more had to be put down. The driver was not hurt.

The cows were then loaded onto a tractor-trailer and called the police.

An ADOT official stated that the southbound HOV ramp at Maryland Avenue was still closed Friday afternoon.
