Jorda Crook’s box score was impressive again Friday afternoon. But, there was one number that didn’t appear in her actual stats and that left everyone gasping.
Crook’s line following Ohatchee’s 62-43 win over Alexandria looked like this:
38-26-5-3-6
Translation: 38 points, 26 rebounds and five steals. The ‘6’ in this case refers to the six anxious minutes (2 on the game clock), she spent on the floor during the fourth quarter after a hard fall below the basket.
It is a concern when a team has a Crook-type franchise player, through whom all its business flows through, and they suddenly go down for unnatural reasons.
Crook reached the deck at 5:02 in the game to try and rebound one of her shots. She stayed in the lane for a few minutes while the gym was quiet. It looked at first like Crook had broken her left ankle but it was actually a cramp.
She stood up and was lifted off the ground. With 2:51 remaining on the clock, she returned to the game and blocked a shot approximately one minute later.
She said, “I got a cramp,” before retreating to her dressing room. “I was afraid for a second. You don’t want injury to happen. But, I was fine. It’s okay that I am still having cramps, though.
Bryant Ginn, Ohatchee coach, is a self-described half-full type of guy. He was confident that his star forward would do well. However, it didn’t stop him from having some very troubling thoughts.
He said that all the worst-case scenarios are rolling through his brain, but Jorda is so flexible and agile, just like you want athletes to.
“Last year, she rolled her ankle several times and came down on other people’s feet. I initially thought that was what had happened but wasn’t 100% sure.”
It was obvious how short she was away from the game. Despite being comfortably ahead of the Lady Indians when Crook came out the Lady Cubs scored eight consecutive points in her absence, forcing Ginn into a timeout to stop that trend.
Ginn stated, “I’ve been talking to them about it a bit.” “When you get the rebound, you don’t need to search for her. Y’all can take care. They were told to stop looking for her.
“We were getting shots. We didn’t make all the shots we could have made and she would have received offensive rebounds. But, I thought we did OK.
Crook was her usual dominating self at the jump, scoring 21 points and grabbing 18 rebounds by halftime. If she had been a bit sharper at the free throw line, Crook would have scored 40 points for the second consecutive game.
She has scored 43, 35 and 42 points in her four previous games, all Ohatchee wins. She has outscored the Lady Indians’ last three opponents. In the six first games of the season, she scored 205 points.

SPRING GARDEN 86 COOSA CHRISTIAN 2. The Lady Panthers were very close to achieving a complete shutout of the basketball game, but gave up two points in the third quarter.
Ace Austin’s rare quadruple double was just as impressive: 14 points and 10 rebounds, 13 assists and 10 steals. Also, she had five blocked shots as well as two turnovers.
It has been done by only four players (Nate Thurmond; Alvin Robertson; Hakeem Olajuwon; David Robinson). Only Robertson’s 1986 quad-dub had all four of Austin’s components.
Five Division I women’s athletes have achieved quadruple doubles, including Grambling’s Shakyla hill in 2018.
Molly Heard, a Pisgah high school student, had a great year. She scored 29 points, 12 boards, 10 blocks, and 10 assists against Scottsboro.
Libby Brown was the leader with 22 points, while Chloe Rule scored 16.

Although Will Ginn has not been a head coach for very long, he is a skilled and knowledgeable coach.
You can talk about style points or winning ugly, but one thing matters to the new Alexandria basketball coach.
He said, “I just want to win.”
The Valley Cubs’ victory over Ohatchee (Ginn’s third game as their coach) was very absorbing.
After a disappointing showing, they rebounded and hit nine 3-pointers. This is more than they made in their previous two games. They also received balanced scoring from the rest of the lineup.
While there were other issues that weren’t quite as positive, it all led to the team’s second win of the season. That made the new coach very happy.
He said, “We played hard.” “I felt that last night, we were intimidated and lost the game before it even began. But Moody was a great team.
It was a kind of bounce back night. Although we played well, we need to improve on the fundamentals. Although we have a lot of work ahead, I assured them that as long as they keep working, it will be fine.
T.K. Downie’s 12. Drake Davis and CleatForrest scored 11, while Evan Snow scored 10. Kory Cargal scored nine points.
Ginn stated, “We try and get points whenever we can.”
They came from far away on this day. They split their nine 3s between five players. Drake Davis opened the game with a 3, and he hit three. Cleat Forrest and Evan Snow each had two.
Ginn stated, “We shoot the ball fairly well, but they played some zones, too, which gave us more open looks than usual.” I like shooting 3s. Our shooters can shoot 3s. They know who is supposed to be shooting them, and who isn’t.
This one was won by the Valley Cubs, who took control early. They jumped out to a 19-2 advantage in the first quarter. Kelbe Crook, Ohatchee, was the top scorer with 18 points.
