Piedmont, AL –During the recent Piedmont City Council meeting, Councilman Greg South asked about the water in the Piedmont Springs near the Sports Complex. He expressed his desire to get the area cleaned and perhaps used for local residents. City Mayor Bill Baker asked for the water to be tested to determine how pure it is, and whether it’s safe to drink. The results of the tests were released Tuesday evening during this week’s City Council Meeting. The results showed coliform in the range of 78.9 MPN as well as E.coli in the range of 1.0 MPN. Mayor Baker declared that the water that comes from the spring was not safe to drink.
In addition to the other matters handled in other areas by City Council, approval by the Council of a contract signed with AVENU to manage tax collection on behalf of the City. Resolution 2023-07 was passed that addresses an abatement problem at 95 Calhoun Street. The grass is a mess and attempts to get the homeowners haven’t been success. Therefore, the City will cut the grass and place a lien to the property to collect future fees.
Piedmont Police Chief, Nathan Johnson gave Nathan Johnson, the Piedmont Police Chief’s Police Activity report for the month of April. There were 37 arrests for the misdemeanor side and eight criminal charges. Police officers conducted 706 officer made contact with the people in the public, issued 51 traffic citations and attended to 13 traffic accidents. Officers were dispatched to 336 service calls, and 93 of them resulted in the filing of a report. Officers completed 9569 miles of patrol as well as they also had the Dispatch Office receiving 2145 phone calls, dispatched 372 emergency calls, 97 fire calls and four after-hour utility calls. The court collections for the month totaled $11,598.76 with the City keeping $4731.75.
Payments were approved for $378,959.98 plus two weeks of payroll totaling $139 032.69 which totals $517,992.67.
A new Piedmont City Council meeting is scheduled for June 6th, at 5:45 at night inside the Council Chambers.
