Washington D.C. – Memorial Day that falls on the final Monday of May, honors the soldiers and civilians who were killed while serving in the military. To commemorate Memorial Day, fly the United States flag at half staff from dawn until noon and then raise it to its full in the afternoon until sundown.


The flag, when flying at half-staff, must be first raised to the top for a brief moment, before slowly dropping to half-staff. The flag is then lifted to the top before being lowered to half-staff for the duration of the duration of the day.
