Weaver, AL – On the evening of 6 June 2023, at about 6:20 pm, Weaver Fire Department received a request for assistance concerning a possible fire in a structure at the former Weaver Airport. On arrival, Fire Chief Brian Bunn, said they saw one hangar that was engulfed in smoke and flames.
It is believed that the McMinn Airport, which is now shut, was initially inaugurated in the early mid 1960’s. It had an asphalt runway that measured 2,650 feet and five hangars. It was used primarily to provide general aviation services for those who were coming to or leaving from events that were happening in the region. It was situated at McMinn Road and Airport Road in Weaver.
Chief Bunn stated that two planes were inside the hangar, however, it was more used for storing the hay. While fighting the flames, other departments were asked for assistance. After the fire was in control, Weaver Fire Department, Angel Fire Department, Jacksonville Fire Department, Alexandria Fire Department, Big Oak Fire Department as well as White Plains Fire Department were all on the scene. Chief Bunn said that two firefighters sustained injuries during the fight against the fire. A Weaver firefighter was afflicted with heat exhaustion, and was treated on site by medical personnel, but didn’t require being transferred. Meanwhile, a Jacksonville firefighter was injured by a severe cut on his hand that necessitated him to be taken to RMC to be stitched. He was transported to RMC for stitches. Jacksonville firefighter received treatment, and released.
Chief Bunn confirmed it was deemed to be extinguished at 11:33 p.m. after a battle lasting five hours. “I want to acknowledge each department and firefighter who helped our efforts.” stated Chief Bunn. “I would be grateful to Anniston EMS for being on the scene to make sure our firefighters were well taken good care of.”
