The work on a major walkway project that covers the entire campus of Andalusia High School and Andalusia Junior High School is expected to begin in the summer of this year, following it was announced that the Andalusia City Council approved a bid of $953,815 for the project from Wiregrass Construction Company Tuesday.

The nearly 1.1-mile walkway project is mostly funded by the federal TAP grant, and the match being 40 percent with local funds. The city is currently seeking additional grants for the project.

Alongside this project in conjunction with this project, council members of the City Council also approved a $469,277 construction project together with Bullard Excavation for drainage improvements on Henderson Street, and for improvements to Coleman Avenue from the Bypass to Henderson Street.

The two projects are inextricably linked, Darren Capps of Southern Engineering Solutions stated. He added that contracts will be signed within between 20 and 30 days and work should begin soon afterward.

The Mayor Earl Johnson said the projects will finish the work to the AHS campus, and will bring fresh excitement to the communities near the high school.

“We have seen from our experiences when we have constructed sidewalks in other towns the extent to which they increase fitness and keep people interested to live in a community,” he said. “We believe this can help in the high school communities and also highlight the athletic facilities of this school.”
