Anniston City Championship Matched Again

Anniston, AL – Brooks, Wigington tied for lead following the opening round of Anniston City Championship. Four players were two strokes back. Includes scores as well as Sunday tee times.

Andrew Brooks was a fan of history following Saturday’s first stage in the Anniston City Championship at Cane Creek.

The conversation over the previous two Calhoun County Golf Tour wins led him to glance at his co-leader, and reminisce Gary Wigington just who won the County Match Play championship once when.

Brooks as well as Wigington shot 3-under-par 69s Saturday. They will join Landon Straub and Brennan Clay in the final tee-group to play Sunday’s last round.

They are two strokes ahead from Straub, Clay, Kevin Daugherty and Chad Calvert.

Brooks who also won the previous year’s Calhoun County Championship, seeks his third Tour victory during his fourth Tour points event in 2023.

“There’s plenty of golf to play,” Brooks said. “It’s always a good thing for me to have this situation and heading into the weekend.”

Brooks is a co-leader in the tournament that he misses the majority of seasons. It was a good thing that Anderson’s son’s baseball activities with Alexandria’s 11-under All-Stars took off this weekend, allowing Brooks to play in his 3rd Tour appearance of the season.

He shot the season’s lowest round, just one stroke better than his 70-hole final round during the Wilfred Galbraith Invitational earlier in the month. This put him at the at the top of Championship B Flight at Anniston Country Club.

He will be in this final stage of the Anniston City Championship with a chance of winning. To get to this point, it was about overcoming back-to-back bogeys on the holes of. 11, 10 and 12, on the weekend.

“I started off with a decent start by birdieing two and four and then birdied 9 to close my front nine,” he said. “Went to the holler and I made three straight Bogeys.

“I did my best to not let it derail me for the rest of my life.”

Brooks recovered to the par No. 13 and then birdied at the par-5 14th hole. It is the third birdie within four holes. He struck 11 fairways and 13 greens during regulation. He completed the day on 27 putts.

Co-leader Wigington scored 10 fairways and 15 greens, with 31 putts.

“One of the most enjoyable days I’ve had in quite some time,” said Wigington, who took home the RTJ Silver Lakes Championship to begin the season. He also leads in the Tour points. “Only was able to make one bogey on the day. I’m just happy to be a contender in the next round.”
