Calhoun County AL – According to Calhoun County Democrats: “We are making an inventory and double checking it!” Ho! Ho! Ho! Christmas is near! So is the 6th Annual Calhoun County Democrat ‘Christmas Shoebox Appeal for the Homeless’
BACKPACKS that are water-resistant are great gifts for the homeless. The homeless are often found carrying their belongings around with them in plastic bags, as they don’t have a place to store them. A backpack would make a big difference!
Keep in mind Interfaith Ministries provides hot showers 2 days a week to homeless people. Large and x-large sizes of t-shirts, underwear, and other clothing are also available. Wrap them in plastic. Unwrapped
Pop-top lids are a popular choice for food and snacks.
Vienna sausages; soups and ravioli; pasta, canned chili; various fruit in a cup; any meal that comes in a can with Pop-Top! Chewy granola bars, cheese crackers, peanut butter crackers, fruit rollups and snack bars, protein bars, beef jerky, Slim Jims are all good snacks. Small packs of tuna, crackers, deviled Ham, etc. ; dried fruit/raisins; peanuts/trail mixture; fruit cups/pudding cup (the ones that don’t need refrigeration). ; small bottles of water or juice; and a spoon or fork. It can take several days before bags are distributed.
You will also appreciate personal care items such as socks (black or brown, adult size); mini-packs of tissues; toothpaste; bar soap; shampoo; washcloth and/or towel; deodorant, comb; small packets of hand/body wissies; Band-aids/Chapstick; handwarmers; feminine care products (do not pack these in your bags; just keep them apart).
Unfortunately, homeless people include children. Children are often homeless because they have the same needs as adults. Consider giving them a toy, puzzle, or doll that they can carry around. There is nothing that takes up too much space.
SHOP – Enjoy the smile it puts onto your face and the joy that it brings to you heart. Bring your gifts to the CalCoDem Shoebox’ Christmas project, HQ at 812 Noble Street corner of Noble & Hwy 202 from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM.
