Officials from officers from Opp Police Department arrested a suspect who was accused of stealing a car after an unintentional chase and a search.

As per the OPD Local law enforcement officers were notified on the 17th of July, Monday regarding a female who was from Opp who was allegedly stealing an unidentified black 2023 Hyundai Elantra from an Shell gasoline station that was located situated in Trussville, Alabama. Based on OPD chief Kevin Chance, at approximately 8:59 p.m., Opp patrol officers saw the vehicle come within the city limits, driving in the direction of southbound Hwy. 331.

Chance told the police officer to turn on the vehicle’s lights to conduct a traffic stop however the driver speeded up and made an immediate right into Potter Road.

“The vehicle was around three hundred yards when the female driver slammed her brakes, then jumped out of the vehicle, and ran into forest,” Chance said.

The Covington County Sheriff’s Department K-9 tracking team was informed and, after an hour and half, they located the female on Potter Road near Spanish Trail Road to the to the north of Lake.

The female, 22, is known as Aaliyah Jade McCormick from Opp. She was detained and charged with taking property stolen and attempting to evade law enforcement officers.

Opp Police Department Opp Police Department expressed its gratitude towards officers from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, the Covington County Sheriff’s Office, and K-9 tracking for their help in this particular case.
