Covington County experienced a month-over-month rise in its initial seasonal corrected unemployment in the month of June as per information obtained from the Alabama Department of Labor.


The county’s rate increased by 2.3 percent during May to 3 percent by June. The rate is below June 2022 average which is 3.2 percent.


The counties adjacent to Butler County also experienced the same trend. Butler County’s rate at 3.2 percent was an increase from the rate in May of 2.5. Coffee County’s rate stood as 2.7 percent, which was up from 2.1 for the month prior. Conecuh County recorded a rate of 3.9 in June, an increase from 2.8. In Crenshaw County, the rate stood at 2.8 increasing from 2.2. Escambia recorded 3.2 percent, an increase from 2.6 percent. Geneva County’s rates were 2.7 percent, which was up from the previous month’s 2.1 percent.


The unemployment rate in Alabama for June remained the same from May, at a record low of 2.2 percent. It is less than the rate for June 2022 which was 2.6 percent. This is 50,427 unemployed individuals, a new record low, as compared to the 51,419 who were employed in May and 58.505 by June 2022.


The number of people classified as employed increased by 20928 during the year, reaching an all-time record of 2,253,490. The labor force of civilians also hit a record of 2,303,917 with an additional 12,850 people joining during the course of the year.


The year-over-year the employment of wage and salary was up by 55,700 to the record-setting high of 2,163,600. There were also growth in the hospitality and leisure sector (+11,400) and the private health and education service sector (+10,000) as well as transportation, trade and utility sector (+8,400) in addition to other sectors.


The month was characterized by the number of salaried and wage workers increased by 16,900. These gains were observed in the leisure and tourism sector (+8,300) and the transportation, trade and utility sector (+2,800) as well as industry (+2,700) and many more.


The counties that have the lowest rates of unemployment have the following: Shelby County at 2 percent, Morgan County at 2.1 percent, and Madison and Cullman counties with 2.2 percent.


The counties with the highest rates of unemployment include: Wilcox County at 7.5 percent, Perry County at 6.2 and Dallas County at 5.7.


Cities with the highest rate of unemployment include: Trussville and Vestavia Hills at 1.8 percent, Madison at 1.9, and Alabaster, Homewood, and Hoover at 2 .


The cities that have the highest rates of unemployment include: Selma at 6.7 percent, Prichard at 5.6, and Bessemer at 3.9 percent.
