The representatives for the Maggie J. Bryant Scholarship Fund announced the winner of the scholarship in 2023 at an ceremony in Dozier.
Ajayden K. Rogers
The recipient for this year’s award was Ajayden K. Rogers, who is a graduate from Goshen High School. The scholarship is given to students with a primary residence in Covington, Crenshaw, or Pike counties.
Rogers lives in Troy and is a 2023 graduate from GHS where she was a top performer as an athlete and teacher’s assistant. She is passionate about volunteering for others as well as giving back to the community as shown through her capacity to manage studies and volunteering for the community. In the course of winning the Maggie J. Bryant Scholarship which she received $1,500 to cover college costs. She is currently enrolled at Troy University with plans to pursue a degree in Nursing.
The MJB Scholarship Fund was established in the year 2020 in memory of Maggie J. Bryant to aid students in pursuing their education and appreciate the value of continuing education and leadership in the community. Award winners are role models for others through their leadership qualities in the community academic excellence, academic excellence, and continuing education. Award recipients may be awarded up to $1,500 to help with college costs. Candidates can nominate themselves or self-nominate every year before June 30 and the winners chosen by July 31st.
“Our aim is to build a community of leaders for the future who value the importance of continuous learning and servant leadership like mom did.” declared Marenda Bryant Caldwell who is the chairperson for the MJB Scholarship Fund.
Bryant was a nurse’s assistant by profession however she was a self-taught religious scholar. She was a prominent figure in the community she lived in and throughout her life, she demonstrated the importance of serving as a leader. She was a wife of a pastor and served for many years at the top of a variety of religious and community organisations. Additionally, she became a popular speaker at community and church gatherings. She was a voracious reader, and was always on top of the latest trends and news. This included the ability to text and use Facebook using a smartphone in her 70s.
The MJB scholarship will be given annually to fund worthy high school seniors and college freshman. The recipients are required to be in good academic condition, appreciate the importance of continuous learning and show commitment to giving back to the community.
