Juneau residents who lost their homes or damaged by the weekend’s floods can seek financial assistance by the state. The deadline for applying is October. 9.
Assistance for homeowners to with the cost of repairs cleaning as well as other costs related to the floods. It can also help pay for temporary housing if homeowners are forced to relocate.
Anyone who needs to fix their land in the Mendenhall River can do so immediately, without needing permits in advance. However, property owners must let City’s Community Development Department know about any work that involves stabilizing banks immediately after they begin to ensure that staff members can start the process of obtaining permits.
Homeowners must submit applications for grading permits and floodplain development permits in the next month. The forms are on the website of the city.
The city has rescinded eight buildings, meaning that they’re unsafe for occupancy. The city’s deputy manager Robert Barr said reopening those buildings requires approval from the city’s property inspectors. Notifying the city of the bank stabilization effort as soon as it is announced can help the process run smoothly, he said.

Barr advised homeowners to speak with a planner at the Community Development Department if they’re concerned about possible bank erosion. The general rule, he said homeowners still need permission before undertaking stabilization of banks unless there’s a security concern.
“But every circumstance is different The bank is very unstable currently due to the flood event,” he said.
