Juneau residents who are interested in constructing mother-in-law homes can now apply for bigger grant from Juneau to assist in the cost of construction. They’ll have to wait for a couple of years until they are able to list their properties as short-term rental.

In a meeting on Monday night during a Monday night meeting, at a meeting on Monday night, the Juneau Assembly voted to update the grant program to help residents construct additional homes on their properties. The prior version, which provided $6,000 in grants, was canceled in June. The new grant amount is $13,500.


The prior model of this program stipulated that applicants wait for at least three years to rent the property for a rental on a short-term basis. The resolution reads the Vice mayor Maria Gladziszewski suggested that increasing the waiting period to five years might assist in determining the best housing options for Juneau residents.


“span style=”font-weight 400 ;”>”That’s the reason behind it,” she said. “It’s not meant to provide short-term rental properties.”


Assembly Member Michelle Hale worried that further restrictions could discourage individuals from taking part in the programme.


The span style=”font-weight 400 ;”>”Communities with lots of regulations and have a lot of restrictions are generally less successful in creating homes,” she said. “I believe we should speed up housing construction instead of placing the conditions in place. .”


The amendment was passed by 5 votes which included Hale along with Wade Bryson voting against increasing the limit on short-term rentals. Members of the Assembly Christine Woll and ‘Waahlaal Giidaak did not attend Monday’s session.


After amendment the resolution was passed unanimously.
