Andalusia Students at the High School of Andalusia Cape Merrell and Ivy Rogers received the National Rural and Small Town Award which is an academic award given by the College Board National Recognition Programs. Students who are eligible are those with a GPA of 3.5 or more and have scored well in the PSAT/NMSQT exam or PSAT 10 or have scores of 3 or more on at least two tests for the AP exam, and go to schools in rural areas or a small town.
Cape Merrell
Cape has been elected the SGA President Cheer Captain, SGA President as well as a player on the team for volleyball, Anchor Club and Usher Club. Cape was recently named the Alabama’s Youth Leadership Council (YLC) Representative for the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association and PowerSouth Youth Tour Essay winner. As a part of the National Honor Society, Cape is currently ranked in the top five of her class. She is planning to attend Georgia Tech or Mississippi State to pursue a biomedical engineering degree, and then work in the field of tissue engineering. Her parents are Hannah Merrell and Walt Merrell.
Ivy She is Distinguished Young Woman (DYW) for Covington County and a member of the Speech and Debate Team, Peer Helper Club, Anchor Club, and SGA. She is an active participant in the National Honor Society, ranked among the top ten students in her class, and a PowerSouth Youth Tour essay Finalist. Majorette of the marching band, and dancer at Andalusia Ballet. While Ivy is not yet deciding on her college choice, she is planning to pursue a double-major in biomedical sciences. She will then go on to take up a dermatology career. The parents of Ivy include Tina as well as Scott Rogers.
“We’re delighted to know that Cape and Ivy are recognized with this award,” said Principal Ray Wilson. “We are extremely happy for them and their accomplishments in the classroom as well as their scores with regard to College Board assessments.”
