Two rivals from the cross-county area took to the court for area play in the event that Pleasant Home earned a 3-0 victory at Red Level in a varsity volleyball match on Thursday, September. 7.
The Lady Eagles, ranked fourth in the state, improved to 5-5 overall and 2-0 in their games in 1A Area 2 foes with a 25-21, 25-21, winning score of 25-8. They lost to the Lady Tigers fell to 3-3 overall and 0-1 on the field.
“This is a lengthy but good week to us. We just finished an easy three-set win over Kinston on Tuesday. We are hoping to play five games in an event on Saturday. I think we were able to hit the ball and pass the ball very well tonight. We didn’t make a many mistakes when passing the ball and were able make the ball more stable and that in turn helps players hit it more effectively,” PHS Head Coach Tony Wilson said.
SET ONE
Kayden Lord Kayden Lord Red Level a 1-0 lead by scoring an ace in the first set, however Hailey Ward evened the score at 2-2 by slaying. Ward provided Pleasant Home a 5-2 lead by securing an ace. Pleasant Home’s Lady Tigers rallied back and created a 5-5 tie but ended up having difficult times for the remainder of the game. It was the Lady Eagles scored six of the next eight points to take an 11-7 advantage and then gained a 1-0 advantage with the last 14 points. Ward was able to kill and 3 aces during the offensive flurry, and Meredith Wilson and Bri Hall each had three kills.
SET TWO
Bailey Henderson gave Pleasant Home an advantage of 3-1 with an Ace in the second set. Zoey Phillips reduced the deficit to 7-4 by completing an ace and Bailey Green brought the score up to 8-6 thanks to an Ace. The score was 11-9. Red Level went on a rise after Victoria Walker delivered a kill to give them a lead of 14-13. The score increased to 18-14, until Ward struck consecutive aces and brought the score to 18-18. Kamry Lambert hit one kill to take an 18-18 advantage however, momentum quickly shifted to the opposite direction after two kills by Wilson led to 21-19. After a kill by Ward for set point Wilson secured the 2-0 advantage with an Ace.
SET THREE
The Lady Eagles led the entire third set and took an early 2-0 advantage. Kayden Weaver extended the cushion to 5-1 and Ward had two aces, resulting in an 11-4 lead. Weaver also added another kill to take an advantage of 17-6, while Ivy Youngblood had back-to-back aces to take an 20-6 advantage. Lord was able to make the score 20-8, thanks to an ace, however, it wasn’t enough to allow players from the Lady Tigers to overcome.
Both teams will be playing on Saturday, September. 9 at the Straughn Cup, a tournament that is held by Straughn.
Red Level plays in the high school gym at 8:30 a.m. against Straughn and 11:15 a.m. with Kinston and 12:30 p.m. with Brantley.
Pleasant Home takes the middle school court at 8:30 a.m. against Andalusia at 12:30 p.m. against Samson and at 1:30 p.m. with Geneva.
