The Andalusia Bulldogs were kicking on all cylinders on Friday evening, winning an 63-19 win over their the region’s opponent Montgomery Academy.
Alongside a strong performance from the Andalusia offense Special teams also had a great game with two kickoff returns as well as punt returns. The defense also kept the Eagles to just six points up to the midway point of the 3rd quarter.
The senior quarterback Jack Lathrop had a good game, going 7-of-12 to gain 2 touchdowns and 185 yards.
The Bulldog running backs were solid with four players running over 50 yards, while three found the endzone. Zerrick Jones ran 57 yards in eight runs for two touchdowns. Jordyn Skanes was the top scorer with 97 yards from just three runs. Noah Curry added 62 yards on 10 carries and scored, while Pickle Calloway sprinted eight times to gain an average of 61 yards.
Tyler Sigers was the leading receiver, catching three times for the distance of 96 yards and a touchdown, while Kal Crittenden had two grabs for scores of 62 yards. Jordan Stallworth and Calvin Daniels each had a catch of the distance of 14 and 10 yards respectively.
Crittenden also starred in special teams with 62-yard punt returns, and the kickoff returned 88 yards. Jones added a second kickoff of 80 yards on the return.
The Eagles were the first team to lead of the game making it 33-0 on their opening play, hitting an 63-yard pass that put them up 6-0. They missed the point-after.
The lead didn’t last for very long. Lathrop made his mark with his first pass of the game to score the big run of 41 yards, courtesy of Sigers. Jones went on to score scoring with the 16-yard run. Cobb Stewart’s point-after was excellent and gave Andalusia an advantage of 7-6.
A three-and out by the Bulldog defense resulted in an impressive punt return from Crittenden towards the MA 33. On the third down, Lathrop targeted Crittenden who was able to get the ball into for a 32-yard touchdown. The goal-after was not scored and the score was 13-6.
Andalusia extended its lead in the second quarter as Jones was up in the middle to score. Curry played the ball in for the two-point conversion making the score 21-6.
When the defensive team forced a three-and-out, the MA punt was knocked down to seven yards. On the first play, Skanes broke the line and raced through the MA defense to score the score of 93 yards. Stewart’s punt helped his Bulldogs to a 28-6 advantage at the midpoint of the second.
A third three-and-out lead to an additional Andalusia touchdown when Crittenden made the punt all the way to the 62 yards and scored an additional Andalusia touchdown.
Crittenden scored the following AHS touchdown, kicking the opening kickoff of the second half for 88 yards. This made it 42-6.
A quick three-and out led to another excellent return from Crittenden towards the MA 46. The first play Lathrop was able to connect with Sigers to score a touchdown. an advantage of 49-6 following the kickoff.
Montgomery Academy would get into the end zone twice during the third quarter however, Andalusia would achieve the final two points of the game with a kickoff of 80 yards returning from Jones during the 3rd period and an 20-yard touchdown run by Curry during the final quarter of play.
The Bulldogs (5-0, 3-1) will take on non-region foe Bibb County (5-0) on Friday, Sept. 29.
