Oxford, AL – At this year’s OxfordFest festival, The Calhoun County Democrats put up an interactive booth that offered and unique method to assess the public’s opinions. They carried out an “bean count” poll, which allowed people to voice their opinions on a variety of topics.

Participants were presented with 10 beans per person and asked to divide them between containers that were labeled with various concerns according to. The format was interactive and gave participants the chance to share their opinions, by distributing their beans to areas that they believed were the most important to them.

Watching the participants be attentive to where they should place their votes offered a fascinating insight into the thought-provoking making of festival participants. These results from this popular straw poll will provide valuable insights into the present concerns of the community at large.

Gun violence was identified as the leading issue, gaining 883 votes. Close behind were voting rights with 666 votes and reproductive rights having 625 voters. Climate change and economic equality are still important to a lot of people, got five46 votes and 125 respectively.

Sheila Gilbert, Chair of the Calhoun County Democratic Executive Committee Sheila Gilbert, Chair of the Calhoun County Democratic Executive Committee, stressed the importance of these small efforts to gain a greater understanding of public sentiments. “Simple initiatives like this can reveal how people are thinking at any given moment,” Gilbert noted, stressing how important it is for elected leaders to pay careful focus on these issues.
