Montgomery, AL — A move aimed at improving the accuracy and effectiveness of the election process in Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen has officially announced the launch for Geographical Information System (GIS) services to all 67 counties of the state. This will be a key element in the election process and districting of voters.

Secretary Allen spoke of the advantages in GIS technology over paper maps and district drawings drawn by hand in a statement that reads, “Utilizing GIS for voter district assignments and precinct assignments is very accurate contrasted with paper mapping and drawing.” Secretary Allen also emphasized that these tools are crucial to assist local election officials accountable to ensure the integrity and security of Alabama’s election.

The money for this initiative is coming by government sources for the office of Secretary of State. As part of the program the Secretary’s office will be able to cover the cost for GIS service for sixteen counties of Alabama starting from September 1, 2023 until July 31st of 2025. The services were made accessible to the remaining 51 counties that were not yet using GIS on the 9th of August 2023.

Secretary Allen applauded the move as a significant move in the right direction for Alabama Secretary Allen praised the move, saying, “It’s a win for Alabama that we’re able to provide GIS services for election districting and voter management to the new counties of Alabama and lessen the financial burden on counties that already have.”

Wes Allen, serving as Alabama’s 54th Secretary is the key position of the state’s chief election official. In addition to supervising election processes, Alabama legislation entrusts to the Secretary of States over 1000 different responsibilities.
