Republican Michael Smith announced Wednesday, October. 25 that he would like to run for the office of chairman of the Covington County Commission.

Michael was raised in Covington County and was raised among his home in the Straughn community. Michael graduated in 1990 from Straughn High School.
“It was a privilege to serve the residents from Covington County as a commissioner for the last few years. I would like to be the county chairman in order to provide more transparency within the community, the commission and within the commission,” Smith said. “I believe that communication is the essential element in a successful company. I also believe in the power of leadership as well as being open to innovative ideas that will help make Covington County an even better home for families. In the last few months it has also been able increase the cost of living and pay for the increase in insurance costs for employees of Covington County while ensuring an enviable budget, thanks to dedication and hard work from department heads and employees. As a result the commission has also reduced the debt of the county and also .”
Michael earned his certificate of associate degree with a major in Emergency Medical Services from LBW Community College. He is currently self-employed and was a member of in the community as the manager of Advanced EMS in Andalusia.
“During my term on the commission I have stood up for the residents on various issues which could effect on their quality of living in the communities they reside in. I have been a strong supporter of the educational system within this county, and I will be continuing to be a supporter of the system. I believe that we must spend money on the education of children in the county in order to ensure that the county’s growth and prosper. While as a member of the commission, we have been able to see many paving projects done through the engineer’s office using federal, state and local funds. I believe in openness with the public and with the commission members to make the county government stronger,” he said.
Michael has been married for a while with Elaine Smith with three children: Jonathan Smith, Taylor Smith Taylor Smith, and Ethan Smith. Michael was the child of June Smith and the late John Smith.
He is running for office for the Republican Primary scheduled for March 5 2024.
