HEFLIN -HEFLIN – A sprain of Gavin Doss forced sophomore Damon Pope to be Anniston’s starting footballer just two weeks back. Cleburne County made him expand a bit on this Friday.

Pope recovered from an intercept to score an 85-yard touchdown pass for Jayden Lewis. Anniston responded to Cleburne County’s lead touchdown by scoring its own in the process of an 38-36 win Friday at L.E. Bell Field.

The victory secured Class 4A’s Region 4’s third qualifying position for Anniston (6-3 Region 4-2, 6-3). The Bulldogs will take on in the Region 1 runner up on the road on November. 10.

T.R. Miller was defeated by St. Michaels last Friday. thereby leaving the last three playoff spots on a three-way tiebreaker. T.R. Miller, Bayside Academy and St. Michaels are tied at 5-5 in region play.

Anniston’s win against Cleburne County alongside Munford’s loss to Handley and White Plains’ loss to Jacksonville the previous day left the Region 4’s No. 4 spot tied with three teams. Cleburne County, Munford and White Plains are 2-4 in the region.

The next week’s finals of the regular season and all games outside of the region will decide the tiebreaker.

Pope’s tying with Lewis was just following Cleburne County scored to take an advantage of 29-26 in the final quarter. Lewis was able to give the Bulldogs security by kicking a 60-yard that was returned for a touchdown, which helped bring the score to 38-29.

“Proud of our boys,” freshman Anniston Coach Rico Jackson said. “Battled through hardship and didn’t give up even when we fell behind.

“Hats on for Cleburne County. They had lights on.”

JACKSONVILLE 62 White PLAINS 0, JACKSONVILLE 62: Jim Ogle completed 11 of 15 passes for 4 touchdowns and 245 yards as Jacksonville took a 42-0 lead in the second half and cruised to victory.

The Golden Eagles (8-1) finished 5-1 in regional play and hold the region’s No. 2 playoff position. Jacksonville will face the not-determined Region 1 third-place finisher at home on November. 10.

Ky’dric Fisher of Jacksonville caught 3 passes, gaining 107 yards with 2 touchdowns and Zae English ran for an impressive 63 yards and a touchdown.

Jacksonville will end its regular campaign next week when they play Oxford in Oxford at home.

The Golden Eagles have 449 points in their nine contests this season (49.9 per game). The team of 2019 broke the school record by scoring 607 points (40.5 per game) over 15 matches. The 2023 team must score at least 159 points in order to beat the record. With the current pace, Jacksonville will need to make into the quarterfinals (3.2 games) in order to break the record.

HANDLEY 35, MNFORD 14:E.J. Goss scored touchdowns on runs of 13 and 17 yards, which helped Handley take a 35-0 lead at the halftime.

Cannon Kyles threw a 65-yard touchdown pass to Makavian Allen. The Tigers scored touchdowns on the rushing line from Nemo Askew as well as Rinza Winston.

Munford’s Amare Edmondson broke an 80-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and Jaylen Williams scored the 16-yard score at the end of fourth.

Handley (9-1) Handley (9-1) region 4 champion has an open date for the last week in the season. The team will start the playoffs on November. 10. at the home against a yet to be determined Region 1 fourth-place finalist.

WELLBORN the score was 62 and SAKS 34 The Panthers scored the final 32 points of the game after losing Saks had a lead of 34-30 in the third quarter.

Wellborn (7-2) won its seventh win in a row after starting the season at 0-2. The Panthers have won the 3A region 4 title last week by winning their first region victory since the year 1995. They also went with a 6-0 record in regional play.

“It really meant a lot to the Wellborn team,” the Wellborn’s coach Jeff Smith stated. “We were crowned champions of the region this week. In this way, we took the title outright.”

Saks was the first to lead after Dorrien Walker’s touchdown run of 3 yards But Wellborn responded with Caleb McCurry’s six-yard score.

Jabari Williams followed up with the 36-yard touchdown, Noah Screws with a 16-yard touchdown pass to Ethan Carroll and Kyle Bright with the 15 yard touchdown run.

Wellborn achieved 604 of its total yards running. Williams was a runner through 180 yards, scoring three touchdowns. Bright 165 yards with an interception, as well Screws 100 yards with the score.

Screws also completed two of three passes to gain 39 yards.

ALEXANDRIA 50 TALLADEGA 15.In the clash of two teams without wins, Alexandria emerged with its first win.

Elijah Hunter rushed for 172 yards while J.J. Beason rushed for three touchdowns to be the leading scorer for in the Valley Cubs. M.J. Morris added 48 yards and a touchdown, as well as an fumble recovery to score, while Jeremiah Heathcock added a rushing touchdown.

BEULAH 38 Weaver 31, Weaver was in the Class 3A Regional 4 game alongside Beulah hoping to create an all-three-way tie for the 4th and last spot in the playoffs. However, they ended up falling just one point short of.

Weaver (3-6, 1-5) had an opportunity to tie the game however, Beulah (4-5 3, 3-3) took the Kaden Gooden ball in the final zone.

“We cannot seem to stop anyone from throwing the ball towards the team.” new Weaver Coach Ken Cofer said. “All the confidence in the world, offensively, but I was by making this side of the ball way too important. The blame lies entirely with me however it’ll be sorted out the next time around. I can assure that you.

“We exchanged scores early and they then did an apex kick and took the ball and momentum. (It at) 24-23 at the half and we weren’t able to take advantage of scoring opportunities and they took advantage.”

Central-Clay 30, Russell COUNTY 14 LaDamion Boyd ran for 162 yards and scored a touchdown. Third-ranked Central-Clay improved to 9-0 and gave Danny Horn his 350th career win.

Horn who has also coached as a coach at Clay County and Benjamin Russell and is currently 350-96 in the 35th year of his. He has won 8 state championships, including six of them at Clay County and two at Central-Clay which was formed after the 2012 merger of the former competitors Clay County and Lineville.

The Vols have rushed with 251 of the total yards on Friday. DaMauri Whetstone ran for two touchdowns.

Darren Harris passed for 30 yards and an interception to Whetstone.

RANBURNE 64 CENTRAL COOSA 39Brody Morgan ran for 98 yards with a touchdown in a well-balanced night for the Bulldogs offense. Ranburne increased to 4-5 overall, while finishing the Class 2A Region 4 game with a 3-4 record.

Curtis Daniel added 83 yards and two scores.

Quarterback Kaide Garrett ran for 83 yards before completing seven-of-8 passes to gain 4 scores and 187 yards.
